Blending Functional Lighting with Natural Light to Enhance the Ambiance

“It’s like staying at a friend’s guesthouse in Kyoto.”
ModuleX® was selected for Tamao, a hotel designed as an unpretentious and mature hideaway, limited to just seven groups per day, offering a distinctive stay at a quaint bed-and-breakfast tucked away along a Kyoto backstreet.

Although newly constructed, all seven guest rooms evoke the atmosphere of a traditional Japanese home, imbued with a sense of nostalgia and a subtle hint of foreign charm.

The lighting plan was designed to highlight the hotel’s distinctive character—centering on the soft, evenly diffused natural light filtering through washi paper by day, and on the movements of guests to enhance the ambiance at night. We crafted the visual and psychological effects of natural and artificial light within a seamless flow of space and time using our original Time Sequence Design® lighting method, for a lighting plan with a perfect layout that delivers the optimal quality of light at the minimal necessary intensity.

For lighting control, we also applied our original environmental control technology ModuleX®Controls to allow for optimal lighting in each area—from the entrance to the guest rooms and bathrooms—all controlled with a single switch.
The result is a hotel that offers a consistently comfortable and welcoming atmosphere at any time of day through a control plan designed for intuitive operation by both guests and hotel staff.
