A Community Village in the Heart of the City, Built to Last 100 Years

ModuleX® was selected for NEWoMan TAKANAWA MIMURE, a facility based on the concept of “less is more.”

This mixed-use facility combines community-oriented public spaces with sophisticated commercial areas. The second floor brings together 12 laboratories centered around OGAWA COFFEE LABORATORY Takanawa, offering food-related experimental experiences, while the third floor features restaurants and shops where visitors can experience food cultures from across Japan and learn about the passion and vision of the producers behind them.

In line with the philosophy of spatial design, the lighting plan follows a thoroughly minimalist and simple approach that reduces the visual presence of the lighting fixtures themselves to an absolute minimum. This highlights the textures of materials such as stone, metal, tile, and glass in vivid detail, while the light gives the space a sense of depth and quiet comfort.
Through the effects of Sanity Lighting®, which takes human emotions and psychological comfort into consideration, we sought to create a refined atmosphere that allows visitors to experience the passage of time at a gentle pace.

For the facility as a whole, where multiple stores with different business formats coexist with public spaces, Filter Lighting Design™ was adopted to express the different roles required of each area while maintaining a sense of consistency throughout. Light of varying qualities gently connects the spaces, creating a sense of tranquility ideally suited even to spaces that place importance on emptiness and negative space.
The arrangement in the symbolic atrium where rain falls onto the greenery is particularly striking. During the day, spotlights illuminate the water and make it sparkle, while at night, only the droplets falling onto the leaves and rocks emerge from the darkness, creating a mysterious and beautiful stillness that is dramatically different between day and night.

To realize Time Sequence Design®, which responds to the passage of time, ModuleX® Controls was introduced to optimally control the impression of the light by adjusting the balance of illuminance and luminance in response to changes in natural light and the flow of people throughout the day, from the freshness of morning to the calm of night.
The same system was also introduced in each laboratory in OGAWA COFFEE LABORATORY Takanawa, enabling the optimal selection of lighting arrangements for each business format.
Here, where a diverse range of cuisines and cultures intersect, meticulously controlled light brings greater vibrancy to each visitor’s experience while supporting the gentle, tranquil passage of time.
